Dental Implants - A Life Changing Procedure

There have been very few advances in Cosmetic Dentistry that have had as great an impact as
Dental Implants. Restoring a person\'s ability to chew or desire to smile is a reward without any
comparison. Surprisingly, the ability to eat and maintain proper nutrition finishes a distant
second behind the overwhelming degree of confidence and self-esteem that comes from a
healthy and beautiful smile. It reminds me of the early days of the comedy show Saturday Night
Live, as one can easily see the truth behind Billy Crystal\'s skit when he said \"it\'s better to
look good than to feel good\".

Whether for vanity, health or otherwise, there are many reasons why dental restoration is an
important consideration for anyone with loose, missing, or decayed teeth, which have occurred
either naturally or accidentally. But, in the case of missing teeth, dental implants in
particular, have significant advantages:

First of all, if we look at what happens when teeth are missing we find that without the
pressure exerted by a healthy tooth, the jawbone will begin to deteriorate. In fact, following the
loss of a tooth, roughly 60 percent of the bone in that area disintegrates within a year, making
the surrounding teeth less stable and more likely to move or lean toward the vacated area. The
subsequent loss of bone density is simply a natural process of the body, occurring when there
is no longer any stress on that area of the jaw.

Now, here is where we can see the unique advantage of inserting a dental implant rather
than a typical denture or bridge. When implants are placed directly into the bone, the jaw is
prevented from deteriorating. And, since the implants are constructed of titanium, there is no
rejection by the body\'s immune system. In fact, the most exciting discovery in the early days of
implantation was that the surrounding bone actually meshes with the implant. That, along
with the localized pressure regained through the ability to eat normally, not only maintains and
restores bone density, it actually helps to increase it.

Additionally, the structural or physiological benefits are not the only important aspect of
consideration when it comes to dental implants. The following are just a few advantages with regard to convenience.

· They can eliminate the inconvenience of messy denture adhesives that must be re-applied
throughout the day.

· They can eliminate gum irritation and the pain of exposed nerves associated with conventional
full or partial dentures.

· They can allow you to speak with confidence in a relaxed and natural tone.

· They can eliminate the need to cover your mouth when you laugh or smile, worried that your
denture will pop out or fall down.

· And, they can restore chewing efficiency comparable to that of natural teeth, as well as,
the natural ability to taste and enjoy your food. This factor alone helps promotes better nutrition.

But again, the most important consideration for dental restoration and implants has more to do
with the way a person feels about oneself. Without question, dental implants will improve
your appearance, since they look, feel and function exactly like natural teeth. And, as a
result will undoubtedly improve self-esteem and confidence with a healthy and natural smile.

Needless to say, implants are certainly more expensive than most of the other alternatives,
but the fact remains that they have rapidly become the first option for replacing missing
teeth. It\'s a choice, the popularity of which has been due in large part to the predictability
of the procedure and resulting convenience to the dental patient. So, if this procedure is within
the range of affordability, the choice for dental implantation can be considered nothing less than
a life enhancing decision.

A Guide To Dental Health

A Guide To Dental Health

by: Seth Miller

People begin to learn about dental health from a very young age, when teeth first begin to show up. But in spite of such early awareness, many people fail to maintain good dental health through their adult life. Good dental health comprises brushing and flossing your teeth every day, and regular visits to a dentist or dental hygienist as well. Besides, people supplement their dental care with the use of products like mouthwash or advanced mouth care systems. You should keep it in mind that the lack of adequate dental care practices will result in cavities and gum disease.

It is generally advised that you use a toothbrush with softer bristles so as to protect your gums. Some people, however, prefer power brush systems that help break up plaque and bacteria in your mouth. But it takes more than brushing to keep your teeth in good health. Some other steps need to be taken to ensure that people do not lose their teeth as they become old.

To begin with, you should understand your own oral health needs, as your oral health depends on your diet, the type and amount of saliva in your mouth, your overall health and your oral hygiene routine. Try to follow a daily routine in consultation with your dentist.

As fluoride strengthens developing teeth in kids and prevents decay in adults, toothpastes and mouthwashes containing fluoride should be used. You should brush at least twice a day, if possible three times or after every meal. You should also floss at least twice a day. Brushing and flossing will remove plaque, a complex mass of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth.

Limit the consumption of snacks and follow a balanced diet plan. Tobacco in any form will enhance the risk of oral cancer and cause stains on your teeth. Visit your dentist regularly and get your mouth examined.

Dental trips go overseas

Increasing numbers of Norwegians are travelling abroad for dental care, since dentists at home are expensive and insurance coverage minimal. One clinic in Budapest is treating around 100 Norwegian patients a month.

A "trip to the dentist" is taking on a whole new meaning, as Norwegians seek to cut dental costs in a country where dental insurance is rare. For some retirees on a fixed income, getting a new crown or two can swallow half-a-month's income.

Dental care in countries like Sweden, Estonia, Poland, Hungary and Turkey can cost a fraction of what Norwegian dentists charge, and the quality is considered first-rate. Even after paying for airfare and hotels, most Norwegian dental patients come out way ahead.

And travelling to Budapest or Istanbul, for example, when combined with a holiday, can simply be more fun.

"I needed two implants and 15 new crowns," Johannes Dybdahl, age 67, told newspaper Aftenposten. He travelled to Budapest to have the work down.

"It would have cost at least NOK 100,000 (more than USD 16,000) in Norway, but here they do it for NOK 35,000," he said. Dybdahl, who's lives on the island of Karmøy in western Norway, had his first appointment at Kreativ Dental in Budapest and was one of around 40 Norwegians being treated at the clinic this week.

Magnar Varsi, age 57, was in a similar situation a few years ago. "I needed complete renovation of my teeth and my dentist in Norway said it would cost NOK 250,000," Varsi said. "I didn't have the money, so I checked around on the Internet for alternatives."

He found Kreativ Dental in Budapest, traveled to Hungary and had the work done for NOK 70,000. The result was better than he'd hoped for, he told friends in Norway, others followed and now he's working nearly full time referring Norwegian patients to overseas dental care.

Other dental trips go to Warsaw, Stockholm and Tallinn, where some dental clinics also help arrange housing for those needing follow-up care.
